What is Denodo?

Denodo Technologies is a data virtualization tool that allows data access, delivery, and governance across hundreds of sources without transferring the data from its native storage while enforcing data governance requirements. Denodo customers can use the fully self-managed tool to connect distributed data through semantic models that decouple data from its location and physical schemas. To execute SQL queries, Denodo users can use third party SQL query engines like OS Trino, or its own recently released proprietary engine built from a fork of Presto DB.

What is Denodo Data Virtualization?

With its origins in the late 1990’s, Denodo offers a data virtualization tool, there isn’t necessarily a framework that is Denodo Data Virtualization. Via the Denodo platform, users can access data, enforce fine grained data governance, and deliver the data across sources without needing to use ETL/ELT processes for data movement. For some organizations which lack large centers of data gravity, this can help with modernization of data strategies.

Can Denodo technologies integrate with cloud storage solutions like Amazon Web Services S3 or Microsoft Azure Blob Storage?

Denodo doesn’t necessarily “integrate” with popular cloud data lake services, instead Denodo treats them as another data source which it can conduct data integration with. However, Denodo connectors lack parallel processing optimizations which can adversely impact performance when compared to other federation tools. Also, organizations should understand how Denodo fits with their open table and file formats strategy as support for some table formats may be limited.

Can Denodo connect to cloud data warehouses like Snowflake or Redshift?

Yes, along with cloud data lakes, Denodo is able to integrate data from Snowflake and Amazon Redshift. However, Denodo connectors lack parallel processing optimizations which can adversely impact performance when compared to other federation tools.

How does Denodo handle data security and governance?

The greatest thing to note with Denodo, similar to other virtualization or federation platforms, is that the data never leaves its storage. Within the platform itself, similar to other tools, users can expect to leverage fine grained access controls, data lineage and observability, as well as monitoring capabilities. However, if increased security needs i.e. Private Links are needed, consider researching the possibilities and limitations further.

What SQL engines can I use with the Denodo Platform?

Up until July of 2023, Denodo would recommend that organizations leverage third party open-source query engines like Trino or Presto. Now organizations have a choice with version 8.0 to continue to use OS MPP query engines or Denodo’s own embedded SQL query engine that is a customized version of a Presto fork only on Kubernetes.

Is Denodo a data warehouse?

Denodo Technologies is not a data warehouse. Denodo is a data virtualization vendor that can access data stored within data warehouses and other data sources for analytics purposes.
